Arts and heritage / Charities / Research
I’ve worked on various projects for the National Trust over the years, in partnership with Lynn Blackadder, a consultant in organisational development for the arts and heritage sectors.
The most recent piece of work involved writing a substantial report on the ‘Encounters’ project which ran at a selection of National Trust places across the Midlands.
Inspired by research at National Trust properties and at other arts, heritage and visitor attractions, individual project teams developed a range of spontaneous, flexible new activities, involving costumed interpretation, storytelling, object handling and demonstrations.
Our report analysed the (mainly qualitative) research into the initiative, and outlined its effect on volunteers, visitors and the properties.
For another project, Lynn and I researched storytelling training providers for front line staff at National Trust properties. First we identified potentially fruitful areas of research and drew up a list of theatre companies, consultancies and storytellers that offer training in storytelling and listening skills. In parallel, I contacted attractions that score highly for visitor experience ratings, and asked for their recommendations. The result is an in-depth report that properties across the National Trust can use for reference.
