#iwill celebrates the power of young people aged 10-20 to make a positive difference in the world. Since launching in 2013, it has grown into a movement backed by over 950 partners and 250 incredible young #iwill Ambassadors.

Each year, this exceptional charity highlights the work that young people around Britain are doing to bring about change. They include #iwill Ambassadors who are mentoring students at risk of expulsion, tackling bullying, coaching young footballers, working to combat mental health issues and battling single-use plastic.

Through my work with #iwill, I’ve had the chance to hear and share the stories of many of these inspiring young people. It’s been a real privilege.

  • Celebrating young people’s social action

I’ve been involved in a range of different communications projects for #iwill, including writing messages to recruit new young Ambassadors, writing key elements of the campaign’s Impact Report, writing web content and creating a supporter pack for Youth Social Action Day.

For the Impact Report, I worked with key people to write their introductory copy, and also wrote articles and blogs for the third sector to raise awareness of the charity’s work.

One of the most fascinating tasks was to write case studies for 51 new #iwill Ambassadors. This involved taking source material written by young people, sometimes talking to them to gather more background, and writing up the case studies to reflect each individual’s interests while highlighting their contribution to youth social action.

    Client testimonial

“We have worked with Fiona across a range of freelance copywriting projects over the past year. These have really varied in scale and format, from refining our campaign key messages, shaping an Ambassador recruitment campaign, our Impact Report, creation of a supporter pack for an awareness day, writing up case studies and researching and writing articles for third sector press.

We have found Fiona to be highly flexible and responsive, something we have really valued as we often work at a fast pace. She has also been very willing to work with a range of stakeholders, including our wider colleagues, partner organisations and our young Ambassadors, in order to shape her work. Fiona has been patient, flexible and understanding while working with our young people – something which does not come easily to everyone.

Fiona has always responded well to a brief, even when one has been rather hastily given, and the copy she has written for us has been thoughtful, nuanced, and clear. When writing fifty case-studies from applications written by young people from age 10 and above, she did a fantastic job of distilling their voices and communicating their stories, as well as being sensitive to issues of personal challenges they may have faced, and our safeguarding responsibilities.

As our work is focused on young volunteers and activists, many copywriters could easily fall into cheesy or old-fashioned language and messaging – but Fiona always managed to resist cliches and write in a refreshing manner, as well as clarifying some of our more dry and technical organisational messaging. Likewise, through her writing and editing, Fiona was able to bring our 2019 impact report to life in order to make it more engaging and accessible to a wide range of audiences.

Personally, we have valued Fiona’s positivity and enthusiasm for the subject and genuine interest in the stories our young people have to tell.

We would highly recommend working with Fiona.”
